Breeding Dalmatians and Roans

Roan x Roan
50% Roan
50% Non-Roan
Potentially 100% showable
Self x Roan
25% Self
50% Roan
25% Non-Roan
Likely 100% showable

You can see that regardless, you have a 50% chance of each baby being roan, regardless of whether the parents are both roan or if one is self. However, you can avoid producing lethals at all if you breed Roan x Self and as a result have a much higher chance of a healthy litter and showable offspring.

If you would like to have a “quick and easy” breeding with little regard to ethics, then roan x roan is the way to go, but still is no guarantee of a quality litter. You may also run the risk of a problem during pregnancy if something happens with an aborted fetus that isn’t properly reabsorbed. Is the chance of losing your sow or never getting a litter from her worth the risk to you?

Breeding self to roan takes more time and patience because all selfs have roaning modifiers even though they aren’t visible. The easiest way to know what those modifiers are is to breed and keep track of offspring and the quality of the
